This book provides an outstanding overview to modern practices and tools used in network forensics and vulnerability testing. It provides a particularly manageable overview of SQL and XSS techniques and pertinent vulnerability testing, and works as a decent rough guide to the use of tools such as Wire shark and Metasploit. Jesse Varsalone smashes this one out of the park. Jesse forces his depth of knowledge and understanding with his years of teaching experience to get right down to business. He leads the computer forensics or newbie hacker through the nuts and bolts of susceptibilities. He jumps right in and make evident in the first 4 pages what a hacker can do by means of discrete vulnerabilities and maintains the pace throughout the rest of the book. He continuously shows how vulnerabilities are subjugated and what to do to discover them and stop them. Jesse is an experienced CF expert and teacher and this is clear in the logical step by step manner the book is written. I found the details of the “how and why” of safely and validly testing the techniques he covers fairly pertinent and significant to beginners. These also serve as good reminders for those who may dip into hacking and penetration testing.
The Table of contents reads like a course outline for an anti-forensics and computer security college class. It starts with the rudiments of Windows exploits and how to guard against them and moves the reader through each attack like a lab exercise, and then moves the reader through the defensive tools. This recipe book, lab-type demonstration allows the reader to see and do the attack and understand the defense. The reader can literally follow the steps on their own test format.
At just shy of 400 pages it isn’t a massive 12 pound vault of knowledge, but an understandable, feasible guide of the Black Arts of computer hacking and anti-forensics.
This book would help as a college text for a basic anti-forensics or introduction to computer security courses. It provided modern, applicable CF concepts and exercises that are the base for a computer security or Computer Forensic technology. This is also a convenient reference of the more common exploits, how they are applied, discovered and thwarted.
I found the contents up-to-date and appropriate, combining discussions of the modern techniques with traditional hacks that are still applicable today. The content is tight and without extra fuzz and easy to either surf through or to follow page by page, front to back.
