“The terror, which would not end for another 28 years–if it ever did end–began, so far as I can tell, with a boat made from a sheet of newspaper floating down a drain swollen with rain.”
This is the 1st line of “It,” the opening to one of Stephen King’s masterworks, and probably the most unbelievable story I’ve ever read. Those who object about It’s length, they need tolerance. Those who object about its characters, they need to look through at themselves and others. Those who object about it being uncouth, dreadful, or horrific, that’s part of the story, and not to embrace it means you miss out on something astonishing.
In the summer of 1958, 7 friends faced something horrible in their urban of Derry, Maine. This something fed on kids, hunting them, lurking on them, and devouring them. It could form itself in any way It liked, whatever their nightmares apt, but always with one symbol: the impression of a clown. The 7 friends all had something in common: They had all escaped It at some point. And in that summer, they erudite about It, opposed It, and killed It… Or so they thought.
28 years later, a boy named Adrian Mellon is seemingly thrown off a bridge by 2 other boys for his sexuality. It looks like an open-and-shut case, but the boys state that there was something down beneath… A clown and a cloud of balloons.
Shortly the friends are being called back to Derry, told that It is back. They took an oath, sealed in blood, to return if It wasn’t dead. Each of them is now very prosperous, and the thought of returning to Derry, of going back to the dismay that they’d all elapsed, is more than they can endure, but they had made a promise.
The construction of It is extremely beautiful in how it’s placed, and wholly builds the story up for all its plot points and climax. “It” also simply avoids a problem with many extensive Stephen King books: Plot threads that go nowhere.
“It” is a story that does take some persistence to get into after the opening hook, but later, you’ll have trouble putting it down. The night I finished it for the 1st time, I was 200 pages away from the end and it was already midnight, but I just had to keep going. I couldn’t delay until morning. I had to read, perceive and feel. The whole thing builds and builds, as well as giving out the love, pleasure, and horror that thrives, and it doesn’t thwarted. Every single event, be it stirring, creepy, or uncouth, is needed to form the complete picture of what may be one of the greatest books you will ever read.
