A unique standard on Confucian theory composed amidst the nineteenth century.
James Legge was a nineteenth century Scottish evangelist to China. This is his interpretation of the “Four Books” and three of the “Five Classics.” The interpretations are dated, and Legge’s elucidations of the writings are regularly obsolete molded, yet these are still imperative and of service interpretations.
Of the “Five Classics,” Legge deciphers the Book of Documents (an accumulation of chronicled writings), the spring and Autumn Annals (an alternate recorded work; Legge additionally incorporates his interpretation of the Tso Commentary on this), and the Book of Odes. (The other two of the five are the Record of Rites and the I Ching, which Legge additionally interpreted, however which are not in this accumulation.) The “Five Classics” have been focal messages of Confucianism since about the time of Christ.
The “Four Books” are the Great Learning, the Analects of Confucius, the platitudes of the later Confucian Mencius, and the Doctrine of the Mean. These writings are all very old, yet they were amassed together, and made the premise of the Confucian instructive educational program, around the twelfth century A.d.
A piece of what makes Legge’s interpretations so accommodating is that he incorporates the Chinese message, on top of far reaching interpretive notes, presentations, and glossaries. This could be a small amount of stunning for the novice, however its amusing to have all the data in one place.
One alert: This set is ordinarily in 5 volumes. I expect that this release has joined together the first and second volumes (the “Four Books”) into one volume, yet it is conceivable that this version does not incorporate all that I think it does.
This book is an extraordinary wellspring of data for the understudies on Chinese history and society.
