This was my 1st intrusion into the ASP.NET world. I had formerly worked on an Outlook plug-in that used C#, so I’m not oblivious with the coding language or the Visual Studio platform. Thus, the 1st few chapters were basically analysis, though I read them anyhow since there is usually a nugget or 2 I can pick up from the analysis. I found the book to be very effective with some phenomenal examples. Additionally, all of the coding examples could be dragged from the website in conditions where you get stuck. Relating to that, there were a few instances in the book that didn’t seem like to work right out of the box, but the process of figuring those out facilitated me to mug up. I will say, that sometimes it was a little annoying to learn about a particular concept and then discover chapters later that there is a far better way to do it and as a result you’d moved out to the other one basically as reference (e.g. raw ADO.NET vs. LINQ and the Entity Framework). Now, I don’t tend to mind that as much, as it gives me another prospect to learn. And over, you never know when you might need to use the older way to get something done (regressive compatibility, customization, etc.).

I’ve go through other reference booklets that carry on to build on 1 instance, so you can see it grow and how the new-fangled items progress your life. This one, however, relies on disjointed instances. The positive of this is that you begin each chapter with a clean slate (in some cases several clean slates depending on the number of concepts covered), the negative is that you don’t get a chance to grasp what comes about when you drop some different code into a program that is already geared to run on something else, and being forced to reimburse for it. This book was a great 1st look at ASP.NET for me, and has been facilitating as a phenomenal reference guide as I’ve been working around on a small project. Linking to that, I will say that the index at the back has been less than compliant when I needed to search some particular items that I knew I had encounter at some point in the book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to get into the ASP.NET world.
