The man in black escaped across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” So starts Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, which has become a contemporary fantasy classic. This rare dark fantasy series starts off in “The Gunslinger,” a disjointed but gripping story of the last gunslinger, Roland.
As the story begins, the last gunslinger Roland is travelling across a world that has “moved on.” He’s chasing an enigmatic man in black, who holds the key to a clandestine Roland has been chasing for his entire life. He stops in a town full of druggies and religious radicals, only to leave it partially ruined — and still in search of the man in black.
But a part of our own world enters: Jake, a young boy who was killed in an awful traffic accident. The gunslinger takes Jake under his annex, and along on his pursuit. Together they cross terrors and dangers — until they find the Man in Black, and the fate that waits for Jake a 2nd time. All for the sake of finding one thing: The Dark Tower, the fulcrum of the universe.
“Gunslinger” is only a small shard of the vast story that the Dark Tower series has become, and it’s also the most fragmented. For a long time the plot wanders from one threatening thing to another, spotted with Roland’s memories about his not-so-pleasant childhood. Things only become momentous in the last part of the book, where Roland catches up to the Man in Black.
The world King creates is a horrible, desert-like place, part primitive, part post-apocalyptic horror, and part old west. Sex, drugs, religion and past politics are mixed in with the basic pursuit. King’s writing is detailed, fresh and intense, with plenty of shoot-’em-up action, transmuted monsters to keep readers on their toes.
The Gunslinger is like a dark fantasy version of those determined P.I.s that Humphrey Bogart sometimes played. He’s coarse, hard, and dark, he doesn’t expose much of his feelings, but he has the sporadic soft spot, and his hidden feelings seep out rather than being evident. Jake is a good assistant, kind of innocent, and completely oblivious about this strange world he’s been hurled into.
Overall, this is an outstanding beginning to an exceptional series. If you want to give this a try, I say go for it! Like I said earlier, even if you’re not feeling it at first, enact and try (at the very least) book 2 before giving up. Or if not, that’s all right too, I guess. But once this series draws you in, you won’t be able to give it up–you’ll be trapped like Roland, unable to give up his quest for The Tower.
