When I 1st heard that Rick Riordan was setting another series in the same cosmos that he had created for Percy Jackson, I was both happy and a little cautious. Happy because I had loved that world and felt it had lots of latent for new quests; cautious because I feared the new series might not meet my prospects and that, if it didn’t, it might someway cast a dark covering over my fondness for the Percy Jackson books. I need not have worried. The Lost Hero, the 1st book in that new series – the Heroes of Olympus – bring about to meet all of my prospects and did so in a fashion that made me pleased Riordan had gone ahead with the idea. While having read the Percy Jackson books is not a criterion for enjoying The Lost Hero, I do think those who have done so will be able to engage themselves in this world much more swiftly and will enjoy the book more than those unfamiliar with Percy’s story.

The Lost Hero introduces 3 new main characters – Jason, who has no reminiscence of his life before page-1 of the story, Piper, a girl with “phantasmagoria eyes” (all together now – Lucy in the sky-yi with diamonds.) who has the talent of urging people to give her things and Leo, whose ingenious and artistic hands need to be always busy. As the story begins, the 3 are part of a group from a school for troubled kids on a field trip to the horseshoe shaped Skywalk that curves out over the Grand Canyon.
I appreciate that Riordan continues to give us both strong female and culturally varied characters and that he seems competent to hit many of the right notes in portraying teenage dialect, actions and emotions. For me, he has an ability for making his characters look real and credible and, in The Lost Hero, he once again thrives in making me care about them. My compassion for and interest in the trio builds as particulars of their lives are shown in the primary chapters of the book (each chapter is told from either Jason, Piper or Leo’s third person perspective) and by the time they head off on their quest, I’m fully devoted in seeing them through their adventures.
Lastly, for those dying to know, Percy Jackson absolutely plays a role in this series. How important that role will be relics to be seen. Next up in the series is The Son of Neptune, due in the fall of 2011.
Highly recommended. Riordan has laid the foundation here for another entertaining and sensational series and I’m already looking forward to the next book.
